Good oral hygiene will help you maintain a great smile. However, our Lenoir dentists often tell patients an attractive smile is not the only reason people should take care of their gums and teeth. Poor dental health can have a negative effect on your quality of life. If your dental health is not up to par, then it could compromise your overall health.

There are a number of ways you can maintain your oral health. Below is a list of essential oral hygiene tips from our Lenoir dentists:

1. Drink Sugary Beverages through A Straw

Sugary beverages are not good for your teeth. However, you can minimize the damage by drinking through a straw. You minimize the amount of sugar that comes in contact with your teeth by drinking through a straw. It sounds silly, but it’s true.

2. Floss Every Day

This is one of most important oral hygiene tips. Flossing helps prevent gum disease. You should floss for two or three minutes at least once a day. Ideally, you should floss before going to bed. If you are not used to flossing, then it is important to remember that it will get easier over time.

3. Keep Floss, Mouthwash, Toothpaste and Toothbrush at Work

It is easy to neglect your oral care regimen when you are extremely busy. That is why you should keep floss, toothpaste, mouthwash and toothpaste at work. If you happen to neglect your oral care routine, then you can take care of it during your breaks at work.

4. Brush Your Teeth

You will need to brush twice a day for two or three minutes. There is a trick you can use if you are not sure about whether you are brushing your teeth long enough. You can listen to a song on the radio and brush your teeth until the song is over.

5. Chew Sugarless Gum

If you love chewing gum, then it is best to switch to the sugarless kind. Sugarless gum not only fights bad breath, but it also helps clean your mouth and fight bacteria. If bacteria attaches to your teeth, then it can cause cavities to form.

6. Visit Your Local Dentist Office Regularly

You will need to visit your general dentist twice a year for cleanings, checkups and x-rays. When you do this, our Lenoir dentists cannot only diagnose oral problems, but we can also diagnose and identify another potential health problem you may not have been aware of. In fact, the first time that many people find out about a potential health problem is at a local dentist office.
